What about the Sony 28-70mm Kit Lens?

Here we go with another kit lens review.

It’s few months since I switched to Sony. And it is time to review the Kit lens (Sony’s FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS Kit Lens) that came with my Sony a7III. I wanted the lens particular for travelling. Unfortunately, Covid-19 prevent me from travelling.

Kit lenses are like Swiss Army Knives, they are good allrounders. But let’s be honest I rather use my Zwilling Knives in the kitchen then shopping onions with a pocket knife.
The same holds up for lenses. You can do a lot with a Kit lens but some jobs require more specific glass. Keeping this in mind I would say the Sony’s FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS Kit Lens does an excellent job as an allrounder.

The built quality is outstanding, it is way better then other a kit lenses. It is mostly plastic, but it feels good and sturdy. The focus and zoom ring work smooth and feels good. And the metal mount is great plus. With 295g it is a lightweight.  But for a lens to be used on mirror-less a camera, it could be a bit shorter.

The focus motor is super silent, and the lens focuses fast and well.

The picture quality is good, and in the middle of the frame really sharp, when stopped down to f8 or more, it shows the best sharpness.

The aperture of F3.5-5.6 is similar to most kit lenses and produces a pretty acceptable bokeh (keep in mind it’s not prime).

When zoomed in there is some pincushion effect, but lightroom takes good care of the distortion, same counts for the vignetting.

A little more range, please. Yes, overall, it is a good range for an all-rounder. I personally would have loved it a bit wider, which would have made it an excellent travel lens.

It is a great, inexpensive, lightweight lens with excellent picture quality and superb focusing capabilities. I will keep this lens for travelling.

Here are some sample pictures taken with the FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS on a Sony a7III.

Side note: I was out on a road trip last weekend. And I realised that the 70 mm is a little to little reach. I got some really great shots but I was cropping had to crop way to much in post processing.
